Global Efforts to Combat Piracy: CODA and International Partners Take Down 16 Anime Piracy Sites

CODA, a global content protection organization, has joined forces with Brazilian authorities to shut down 16 anime piracy sites in a operation dubbed "Operation Anime". This effort is part of CODA’s ongoing campaign to combat piracy and promote the legitimate distribution of Japanese content worldwide.

CODA’s "Operation Anime"

In April, CODA’s member companies filed criminal complaints against several Japanese anime piracy sites in Brazil. As a result, eight sites were shut down, and four more were forced to voluntarily transfer their domains to the authorities. The sites, which had been operating since 2023, had been accessed by over 2.1 million users per month.

International Cooperation

CODA has also partnered with the Korean Copyright Protection Association (KOCAA) to take down eight additional piracy sites. The operation, which targeted 16 sites in total, resulted in the shutdown of 11 sites, with three more voluntarily transferring their domains.

Fmovies, Aniwave, and AnimeSuge Shut Down

In a separate development, the popular piracy site Fmovies, as well as Aniwave and AnimeSuge, were shut down by the authorities. According to Torrent Freak, the sites had been accessed by over 370 million users per month, with Fmovies alone generating over 67 billion page views between January and June 2024.

nHentai Sued for Copyright Infringement

In a separate case, PCR Distributing, a California-based company, has filed a lawsuit against the adult site nHentai for copyright infringement. The company claims that nHentai has been distributing over 5,000 pirated works, including five registered copyrights owned by PCR Distributing. The lawsuit seeks damages and an injunction to shut down the site.

Outlook

The cases are ongoing, with the lawsuit against nHentai set to go to trial on October 30. The efforts by CODA and its international partners to combat piracy demonstrate the growing commitment to protecting intellectual property rights and promoting the legitimate distribution of creative content.
