DAN DA DAN: The Ultimate Rom-Com SF/Horror Mashup

Episode 1: A Delightful Start

I should have known better, sitting down to watch the first episode of DAN DA DAN without having a chance to read the entire 3 hours-long review. Creepy Nuts’ edgy beats and unpredictable rhythm got me hooked, and I found myself binge-watching it non-stop. My wife had to rescue me from the abyss, bringing me a mirror and a large hammer to break free from the spell of the show. But don’t worry, I’ll survive, just like our protagonist Momo, the heroine with a strong heart.

Episode 2: A Stellar Performance

Science SARU’s excellent team, led by Yukinobu Tatsu, delivers a masterclass in animation, storytelling, and music. Every detail, from the characters’ design to the background art, is impeccable. I was particularly impressed by the way they handled the role of our hero, Momo, who’s not just a damsel in distress but a strong, intelligent, and independent individual.

Episode 3: A Thrilling Ride

The show’s pacing is rapid-fire, with non-stop action, humor, and excitement. Creator Yukinobu Tatsu’s horror elements are inspired by his earlier work on Another, and it’s clear that he’s had a blast creating this show. But what’s most impressive is how well the characters are developed, with nuanced, realistic relationships and interactions.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I must admit, I was a bit disappointed by the uneven development of some characters, particularly our villain, Okarun. Still, the show’s lighthearted approach to horror and sci-fi elements won me over, and I’m excited to see what’s in store for future episodes.

The Verdict

DAN DA DAN is a wild, thrilling ride, full of humor, adventure, and heart. While it’s not perfect, it’s a standout in the world of anime and manga. If you’re a fan of romantic comedies, science fiction, or horror, you won’t want to miss this one. And if you’re like me, you’ll be hooked from the very first episode.
