New Era of Yamato: Anno’s Project Takes Off

Anno Hideaki, renowned director of Khara Studio, has announced a new project to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the space battleship Yamato series. The project, still under wraps, is confirmed to be a new anime video produced in collaboration with Voyager Holdings and Tohokushinsha Film Corporation, the rights holders of the Yamato series.

A New Story, A New Era

Unlike the ongoing remake of Space Battleship Yamato 2199, which is currently in production, Anno’s project aims to create a new anime video that explores a unique storyline. The director is tight-lipped about the details, but has assured fans that the project is not a remake of any existing work.

Collaboration with Isibauchi Yutaka

Isibauchi Yutaka, a renowned filmmaker and director of the re-cut version of Space Battleship Yamato 2199, has joined the project as a guest, adding to the excitement. Anno has confirmed that the project will begin production in 2025 and is expected to be completed in time for a cinematic release.

Anno’s Passion for Yamato

Anno, best known for his work on the Evangelion series and other iconic films, has a long-standing passion for the Yamato franchise. He has often spoken about the impact the series has had on his life, citing it as a childhood favorite. In fact, Anno has even credited the series with inspiring his entry into the world of anime.

A Reflection of Memories

In his comments on the project, Anno shared a memorable experience from his childhood. He recalled watching the final episode of the original series, tears streaming down his face as he bid farewell to the beloved characters.

Yamato Yo Towa: Rebellion in 3199

Currently in production is the reboot of Space Battleship Yamato 2199, titled Yamato Yo Towa: Rebellion in 3199. The new series is expected to feature seven films, with the first installment, "Black Invasion," set to be released in July.
