Unleashing the Fury: The First Berserker: Khazan’s Unbridled Action
The latest Soulslike title from Nexon and Neople, The First Berserker: Khazan, initially seemed like another stylish iteration of the genre. However, as you delve deeper, it becomes apparent that this game has much more to offer, particularly for fans of the extensive DNF universe.
A Rich Source Material
The game’s source material is steeped in history, with the titular Khazan serving as a legendary hero who was betrayed by the Pell Los Empire after defeating Hismar the Berserk Dragon. This betrayal led to the creation of the Khazan Syndrome, and subsequently, the Slayer faction. The team aimed to both attract new players to the DNF world and satisfy veterans, requiring a delicate balance of multiverse storytelling.
A Masterclass in Action
Described as a hardcore action roleplaying experience, The First Berserker: Khazan’s violence and mechanics fit seamlessly into the Soulslike genre. However, Neople’s approach still managed to deliver some unexpected surprises. The game’s combat is methodical and impactful, with even the most seemingly insignificant enemies posing a significant threat.
A Testament to Graphical Storytelling
The game’s creative director, Junho Lee, emphasized the importance of portraying the struggles of Khazan’s life graphically and aesthetically. The result is a visual representation of the bloody battles and grit that Khazan faces throughout the game. This approach justifies the violence and struggles, making for a more immersive experience.
A Dance of Death
The optional encounters in the game are a perfect example of the combat’s complexity. One such encounter involves a monstrous bear, whose claws proved to be a formidable threat. However, after deciphering its patterns, the fight became a tactical dance, with the player able to parry and counterattack with ease.
A Boss Fight for the Ages
The demo’s actual boss, a hulking frost ape, was a far more formidable foe. The encounter required a combination of long combos, delayed attacks, and swift movement, making for a thrilling and challenging experience. When finally defeated, the sense of satisfaction was palpable, leaving the player eager for more.
Expanding the IP
The creative director noted that while expanding the DNF universe through different media, such as novels, webtoons, and animation, is possible, games are better suited for telling the universe’s stories through action. In The First Berserker: Khazan, this approach is put to the test, and the results are nothing short of spectacular.
The Verdict
The First Berserker: Khazan is currently in development, set for a 2025 release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. With its unique blend of action and storytelling, this game is sure to satisfy fans of the Soulslike genre and newcomers alike.
